FOUNDATION FOR AFRICAN MEDICINE
The FAME hospital provides medical services that are typically limited, if available at all, to the rural Tanzanian community. In order to improve access and quality to patients in Karatu and its surrounds, FAME provides ever-expanding medical care to anyone who needs it. Additionally, FAME, which is located in Karatu, brings in specialized doctors from around the world to work with and improve the skills of local staff, nearly all of whom are Tanzanian. MAASAI SHINE
Maasai Shine is a community-based organization run by Tanzanians based in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Maasai Shine aims to improve life for Maasai in areas ranging from education to business opportunities. Learn more about the Maasai Shine by clicking here.
MAASAI STOVES AND SOLAR
Maasai women cook for their families and heat their homes with a traditional, three-stone open fire inside of a non-ventilated hut. This leads to toxic levels of smoke and contaminant exposure. Maasai Stoves and Solar (MSS) is combating this issue through efficient, chimney stoves, “focusing on local solutions and women’s empowerment.” Teaching local women how to build the stoves and providing them at a low cost provides a better environment and an opportunity for skill-building and income generation. The organization, part of International Collaborative, is based in the US but is operated and managed in Tanzania by Tanzanians. Learn more about MSS by clicking here. TUMAINI EDUCATION CORPORATION
Tumaini Education Corporation (TEC) focuses on pairing students from the Tumaini School with sponsors, who pay for their education and associated expenses such as room and board. TEC also monitors alumni and organizes alumni events, constructs classrooms, and provides enrichment programs, among other things.
The Tumaini School is a private, English-language based school in Karatu that was started by and continues to be run completely by Tanzanians. For several years, Maasai Partners has been sponsoring children at Tumaini Junior School, providing Maasai living in the remote NCA with quality education that would otherwise be inaccessible. Here those who are enthusiastic about learning have the opportunity for a better education, giving them more opportunity to thrive into the future. The school is one of the top performing in the region and has recently expanded to include a completely separate secondary school. Learn more about their work by clicking here.
Although we no longer sponsor students through the Tumaini Education Corporation, we do still sponsor students directly, enabling them to attend the valuable Tumaini Junior and Senior Schools. Click here to learn more.
